We invite everyone to a hike in solidarity with Mexico’s Civilian Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity on Sunday, June 12th, starting at 12:30 at the bottom of Grouse Mountain.
To make the hike more accessible for all levels, we will be taking the easier route rather than the steep Grouse Grind. Check the starting point here We will be meeting at the trail entrance but if you can’t find us, call Josema (604 710 0288) or Ruth (778 869 0601). We will be there rain or shine. The mountain is accessible by public transport (bus 236 leaves from Longsdale Quay every 20 minutes or so; Grouse mountain is its terminus).
On June 4, the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity started a long march from Cuernavaca to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico (ending June 12) to demand a national pact that would put an end to the escalating violence that has led to the assassination of some 40,000 people since the government of Felipe Calderón started its present strategy to combat drug cartels. The Caravan demands an integrated approach to the problem of drug trafficking that includes the following six points: 1) truth and justice, 2) a transformation from the current war strategy to an approach based on civilian security, 3) a fight against corruption and impunity and 4) against the economic roots and the crime’s profits, 5) urgent programs for youth and effective actions to recover the social fabric, 6) concrete actions to have a more participative democracy in Mexico and to democratize the Mexican media.
If any Vancouver group is organizing other actions in solidarity with the Caravan, please write to us us at rpumas@hotmail.com and josemazam@gmail.com as we would like to participate.
More information on the Civilian Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity and the civilian movement organized around it is here (in Spanish but some documents are available in English, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese). On the failure of the “war on drugs” see the June 2011 report of The Global Commission on Drug Policy (in English & Spanish).
