The International Day of the Dead Tour and Exhibit on Granville Island
FREE EXHIBITION
September 27 – November 8, 2015
Front of galleries and shops across Granville Island.
El Día de los Muertos / The Day of the Dead is a powerful affirmation of life and creativity. The dead are not remembered or commemorated. Instead they are considered present. This is a celebration with the dead, not of the dead.
The most familiar symbols of Dia de los Muertos are the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday. The iconography of the skull (calavera) has always been a poignant indicator of our relationship with death.
There are so many narratives about skulls because countless lives have and will become them, as different as we all are, we are the same in fundamental ways, this is the underlying theme of the ‘International Day of the Dead Tour & Exhibit”
This exhibition is the first of its kind in the province of British Columbia. We aim to engage the art community in the exploration of their own interpretation of death according to their distinct culture, traditions, beliefs and artistic voice.
Clay skulls created by indigenous Mexican artisans were provided to different artists from different ethnic backgrounds living in Vancouver, Canada. The idea is for each artist to recreate their own expression of how they see and interpret death according to their culture and artistic voice using the Mexican clay skulls as their canvas.
