A new way of understanding the place of peyote, and a surprising history of the racial thinking that binds Mexico and the USA
The Peyote Effect shows how peyote has marked the boundary between the Indian and the West since the Spanish Inquisition, and how ecclesiastical, legal, scientific, and scholarly authorities have tried to police its limits. Back and forth across the U.S.–Mexico border, battles over peyote have produced the racially exclusionary systems that characterize modern drug regimes.
Alexander Dawson is the author of Indian and Nation in Revolutionary Mexico, Mexico Since 1989, and Latin America since Independence.
Co-sponsored with the History Department, SFU.
