Book Launch: Citizenship and Participation

Max Cameron et al, Democracy in Latin AmericaMarch 6, 2013, 12:15-1:45pm
UBC, Buchanan Seminar Room C403

The impact of the departure from authoritarian regimes in Latin America had generated a great deal of literature concerning the character of the transition and the dangers of a return to nondemocratic practices. Accompanying the stabilization of democracy in the region, problems regarding the representative system, the relation between civil society, economy and the state, and new forms of citizenship are now at forefront of the debate.

Alex Latta and Hannah Wittman, Environment and Citizenship in Latin AmericaWe present the results of two important research projects on Latin American society and politics: New Institutions for Participatory Democracy in Latin America, edited by Max Cameron, Eric Hershberg and Kenneth E. Sharpe, and Environment and Citizenship in Latin America, edited by Alex Latta and Hannah Wittman, bring challenging discussions about innovatory democratic practices and its outcomes, and the concept of environmental citizenship.
