Juliana Barr (University of Florida), “Spanish Slaving for a White God in the 16th-Century Southwest”
Thursday, September 29, 11:30am. AQ 6229, SFU Burnaby Campus
Barr, author of the prize-winning Peace Came in the Form of a Woman: Indians and Spaniards in the Texas Borderlands (2007), explores the earliest Spanish efforts to invade the Southwest. From California to Texas, as slave raiding swiftly became the touchstone of encounters with Indians, the Spanish arsenal of religious iconography (carried in an effort to demonstrate noble intentions) became conflated not with salvation but enslavement, thus insuring fiercely defensive Indian responses to the incursions into the region in the centuries to follow.
