This paper attends to the relationships between violent death and slow dying in a low-income neighborhood in Santiago, Chile. In what way does the grammar of the event show the difficulty of expressing injury and deaths in terms of action and responsibility necessary for the law, and perhaps also for justice? How might the grammar of the event and the expressions that crop up around it help us appreciate relationships between violent deaths and texture of slow dying in this neighborhood? Throughout, the paper also considers this writing’s relationship to the specificity of this neighborhood.
