Peruvians have been voting today for their new president.
Oh, democracy! And oh, Peruvian democracy of all democracies!
A few years ago, Max Cameron organized a blog on the Peru Election 2006. And while much has changed since then, much remains the same: the weakness of traditional parties; the bogeyman of an outsider candidate (if less of an outsider than he once was); the continuing spectre of Fujimori.
Meanwhile, Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa has showed us his command of colourful imagery in comparing a possible run-off election between left-wing populist Ollanta Humala and Keiko Fujimori to “choosing between AIDS and Cancer”.
What’s not so clear is which is which, in Vargas Llosa’s mind. And in any case, which would you choose?
