The Berlin competition was lacking any consensus favourites until Gloria, a splendidly written comedy-drama from Chile’s Sebastián Lelio, which sent everyone out with a cheery grin and prompted instant awards speculation. It’s a movie about self-worth, and introduces us to a lonely divorcée living in Santiago who decides to hit the senior singles scene, with decidedly mixed success.
Paulina García, an actress barely known outside of Chilean television, has you on her side from the first frame, and drives the character along a beautifully engineered sine wave of hope, heartbreak, desperation and ruefulness. There’s a great scene when she tickles herself pink by dropping her current beau’s constantly bleating mobile phone into a bowl of soup, a gesture he pretends to find droll and romantic while wiping it off in silent fury…
A night out drinking, gambling and being slobbered on in a resort casino ends with a crisp cut to Gloria lying on the beach with only one shoe—we fill in the blanks. A Hollywood remake is instantly conceivable—Sigourney Weaver should snap up the rights—but meanwhile, the Best Actress prize here is clearly García’s to lose. [She won.]—Tim Robey, Telegraph
