Gerald Fallon (UBC) and Zayda Sierra (Universidad de AntioquĂa), “Practicing Community Engagement for Sustainability in Rural Colombia”
Tuesday, April 21, 2015, 12-1pm
Ponderosa G Lounge
This lecture provides practical advice and strategies for individuals trying to facilitate the development of community-based conservation solutions for protecting biodiversity in rural areas.
Through their working experiences with communities in rural Colombia, Dr Fallon and Dr Sierra provide an account of the conceptual and practical dimensions of a community-engagement process created by a group of community-based organizations and expert-institutions. This community-engagement process has strengthened the capacity of culturally diverse rural groups to resolve conservation challenges linked to the biodiversity of their natural environment.
Conceptual foundations of this community-engagement process are outlined, as well as some strategies for building a collaborative learning process among diverse partners in tackling local biodiversity conservation issues.
