Students for Mining Justice write…
We are Students for Mining Justice, a collective of students of UBC (occupying unceded Musqueam territory) from both law school and undergraduate streams. Currently, we are organizing Protecting the Land: a Conference on Mining Justice and Legal Activism, happening October 26-27. We are seeking contributions and involvement from our local community and are working facilitating a space for your voice to be present and amplified at this event.
A little more about us:
We are working to bring awareness about mining injustices to UBC campus, and building a movement among youth, students and the university community to end resource imperialism. We aim to highlight the role of our local, academic, and national institutions in allowing mining injustices or occur, and we do our best to act in support and solidarity with land defenders and water protectors worldwide. Indigenous peoples, especially Indigenous women, 2SQ and trans folks, are often on the frontlines of these resistance movements against violence and human rights abuses; we work to especially center the voices of these communities and individuals.
This October 26th and 27th, we are organizing Protecting the Land: A Conference on Mining Justice and Legal Activism, taking place at Allard Hall. We have invited and are receiving three Indigenous women land defenders ––Ysidora Acuña, Angelica Choc and Kanahus Manuel–– and a number of other speakers to offer critical insights onto the issues of mining injustice and protecting land.
Please join us in attending this free conference.
Additionally, we would like to offer you the following opportunity to contribute to the conference space:
If you would like to contribute your thoughts, art, reflections, performance on mining injustice and defending land please contact us at rsvp@protectingtheland.org.
We are being intentional about the community groups we are inviting to contribute to the community space of the conference. If you have ideas of other groups and individuals that you think might contribute, please forward this call out.
Some examples of contributions to this community space might include: setting up a booth, providing visual or textual materials, poetry, performance, audiovisual materials, art. We stress that your contribution can take the shape you best see fit, and we commit to doing our best to accommodate any supports or materials you might need to realize your idea.
If you could let us know at rsvp@protecttheland.org if you are interested in contributing, before Friday September 28th.
In this way, we can best accommodate your particular needs, and make sure that the community space best enacts your visions.
Thank you, and we look forward to working together towards this beautiful event, please let us know if you have any questions or ideas. We also welcome suggestions about how to make safer and more inclusive this contributions process.
