Mining projects around the world have harmful effects on local communities, particularly Indigenous communities, who often have little to no consultation role in such projects. They have led to allegations of human rights violations, adverse environmental impacts, and displacement of peoples. This conference hopes to bring together scholars, lawyers, Indigenous land defenders and community in general to discuss this issue and the way forward.
Among the conference’s speakers are three women Indigenous land defenders. Kanahus Manuel will be speaking on Friday evening about the Mount Polley disaster and its effect on Secwepemc territory. Ysidora Chaupe Acuña and Angelica Choc will be speaking on Saturday morning about their experiences and struggles in Peru and Guatemala, respectively.
Students for Mining Justice is a legal advocacy group based out of the Peter A. Allard School of Law. Our mission is to use law and advocacy to promote justice for communities affected by mining.
We look forward to your participation in this important initiative and space for learning, and please share the invitation with your friends and networks. More information at https://www.protectingtheland.ca/, and our Facebook event page.
