Review: Lincoln Kaye, “Club Habana’s Afro-Cuban sizzle” (Vancouver Observer, November 7, 2016)
Club Habana An Evening of Cuban Jazz features one of the most influential figures in modern Afro-Cuban jazz, Alfred Thompson. The exceptional saxophonist, composer, arranger and Grammy award winner will be joined by other prestigious Canadian Cuban Jazz musicians including Miguelito Valdés (trumpet) Israel Berriel (bongo & congas) Pablo Cárdenas (piano), José Sánchez (percussion), Danay Sinclair (vocals) and Roberto Riverón (bass). Audiences can expect outstanding instrumental performances and stimulating new music from the collaboration of such top-flight musicians.
Club Habana An Evening of Cuban Jazz explores the new frontiers in contemporary Cuban jazz, presenting a repertoire inspired by the creative fusion of Spanish and African cultures -the two main sources that gave rise to what is now known as Afro-Cuban music. The style draws on several diverse cultures of Latin America and others found across the world, revisited through jazz improvisation and extended experimental vocal techniques. The concert is a bold fusion of Afro-Cuban ritual music, popular Afro-Cuban styles, rock, and blues. Reflecting the spirit of the music, it is a true fusion between North, South, and Central America with an emphasis on the infectious rhythms from Cuba and Africa.
This concert is the continuation of the quality programming effort that was initiated last year by the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre with “Afro-Cuban Dimensions: A Musical Journey From Cuba to Canada.” The proposed event aims to satisfy the enormous interest among Canadian audiences in Cuban music, while continuing to explore the creative and artistic potential for collaboration between Canadian and Cuban musicians.
