Lecture: The role of music in the re-democratization movements in Brazil since the 1960s
Speaker Maestro Sergio Pires will touch on the influential musicians of the 1960s who raised their voices against the military dictatorship in the country, and how they helped pave the way to the re-democratization process that began in the 1980s. RSVP: jessiesmith@langara.bc.ca

Feature event – Sweet & Salty: A Night of Brazilian Flavours
UBC political science PhD graduate and Liu Scholar Déborah Barros Leal Farias will stir up some thoughts on Brazil’s energy sector (oil, hydro-electricity and bio-fuels) in her lecture “the Sweet and Sour of Brazil’s energy sector.” Afterwards, guests will be treated to an Afro-Brazilian Extravaganza by Mestre Barrãozinho and Axé Capoeira Vancouver.
Light Brazilian refreshments courtesy of Quejo’s Cheesebuns will be served.

Documentary and discussion: The Struggle for Indigenous Rights on the Atlantic Coast, Nicaragua
The documentary Images of My Territory: Rama and Kriol shows the work of the Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean descendants of the Nicaraguan Atlantic Coast in their struggle for their human rights, their land and their cultural heritage.
