I’m writing now about our new film project, ‘Karwara, People of the River,’ about indigenous people in Peru’s Amazon who are using art, myths and video to defend their river from Big Oil and other outside threats.
We’ve already raised enough funds to buy a video camera and microphone for an indigenous-run community radio station that is co-producing the film with us. Next week we’re off to the jungle to run a 3-week training course with the station’s journalists who will be making short creative films about the importance of their river for their culture and survival.
Despite this progress, we’re still far from our goal and only have until May 16th to raise the funds! If enough people donate NOW, Indiegogo will give us free advertising so that we can reach a wider public.
Indiegogo works on the principle of Ayni’ – a form of mutual help still practiced today in the Andes of Peru. By pooling resources and offering skills and support, homes are built and fields are planted and harvested.
For example, if 90 people give $10 we can buy an editing computer for the radio station. If 400 people donate $1 we can buy paint for our animation workshops with Kukama children and adults.
We understand that not everyone can help financially, but you can still support the campaign by sharing this message with your social networks, liking our Facebook and following our Twitter.
This is the power and magic of ‘Ayni’: working together, we can do something big.
If you have any suggestions for our campaign or project, or would like more information, please let me know.
