VLAFF 2014 is running from August 28 to September 7, 2014!
This year VLAFF is hosting Chile as a guest country, with a retrospective on Chilean actress Manuela Martelli. Martelli will be present for all of her films: Machuca, Navidad, and The Future. For the first time, VLAFF will be screening a series of Afro-Cuban films including El Benny at the UBC Museum of Anthropology as part of their exhibition “Without Masks: Contemporary Afro-Cuban Art”. VLAFF has also partnered with the Etxepare Basque Institute in Spain to present Happy New Year, Grandma!, is once again hosting the Al Jazeera Documentary Competition screening documentaries including Blanco, Quebranto, Refugees in Their Own Land and The Naked Room, and is showcasing two Short Programs in Competition.
Finally, UBC LAS faculty Juanita Sundberg and Alejandra Bronfman will be participating as jury members / facilitators for VLAFF’s “Community Perspectives Initiative.” Local Latin American writers/ activists such as Carmen Rodríguez, Raúl Gatica and Ema Oropeza will also be joining Sundberg and Bronfman, along with other notable scholars and festival founders, in presenting films. VLAFF’s mission is:
- to conduct a Film Festival for the purpose of educating and advancing the public’s understanding and appreciation of Latin American cinema
- to provide independent filmmakers with the opportunity to display their artistic efforts
- to provide Canadian audiences with an opportunity to observe a variety of films, which closely reflect the society and people of Latin American countries
- to generate a network between the Canadian and Latin American film industries and forge an artistic alliance between the two
