Adiós Presidente! Life after Chávez
Tuesday, March 19, 2013, 2–3:30pm
Liu Institute for Global Issues, Multipurpose Room
A roundtable and open discussion to evaluate the legacy of Hugo Chávez for Venezuela and for Latin America in general. Panelists from across the disciplines will offer brief interventions, assessing Chávez’s contributions to Venezuelan politics and culture, his importance for the so-called “Bolivarian Revolution,” and suggesting a prognosis for the country in the weeks, months, and years ahead. Are Venezuelan democracy, society, or economy stronger or weaker now than when he came to power? Will there be a “chavismo” without Chávez, and what is its future? What will change in the country’s relationship with its international “friends” (Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba…) and “foes” (not least the USA and Canada)? What was Chávez’s role in the “Left Turns,” and where might they turn without him?
