SADLY WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL THIS YEAR’S SUMMER ABROAD PROGRAM TO ECUADOR.
UBC’s Program in Latin American Studies an is offering its third study abroad program this summer in Quito, Ecuador! This is in association with the Department of French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies.
Students will earn 6 credits of Spanish from UBC in 6 weeks, while studying, living and traveling in Ecuador. Students will also live with warm, friendly homestay families, and participate in 6 exciting cultural excursions, including a visit to the world-famous textile market in Otavalo, Volcano Cotopaxi, Museo Guayasamín, La Mitad del Mundo, el teleférico, and two city tours.

Location: Quito, Ecuador
Program Dates: June 15 – July 28, 2012
June 15, 2012 – Arrival date in Quito. Students may leave from their hometown if they live in a different city/country.
June 15-17, 2012 – Orientation in hotel.
June 18, 2012 – First day of classes.
July 26, 2012 – Last day of final exams: Please note students may leave after 7/26.
June 28, 2012 – Final day of the program. May stay and travel in S.A. after program.

English for LAST 303 and GEOG 495
Spanish for SPAN 201 and SPAN 202
Latin American Studies Classes: Both GEOG 495 & LAST 303 will count towards either the major or minor in Latin American Studies. NO Spanish language requirement is required if a student wants to enroll in LAST classes.
Eligibility & Pre-Requisite for SPAN 201/202: The pre-req for SPAN 201/202 is SPAN 102, Spanish 11, or special permission from program director before June 2012.
SPAN 201 & SPAN 202 fulfill the Faculty of Arts language requirement.
Academic Credit: Students have the opportunity to earn 6 credits in 6 weeks from UBC while studying, living and traveling in Ecuador.
Students are directly enrolled in UBC classes therefore they will receive letter grades in the program (i.e. no transfer grades, or foreign transcripts or pass/fail grades).
Classes will be held on campus at the Universidad Católica in Quito. However UBC students do not take classes with local Ecuadorian students. UBC professors will teach GEOG 495, LAST 303 and SPAN 202.
Students in their last year may participate in this LAST field school program with prior approval. See program director.

Financial Assistance:cPlease note that students may be eligible for the Dean’s Arts Travel and Learn Abroad Award for Students (ATLAAS) if you have completed at least 1 year (27 credits) in the Faculty of Arts.

Late Application Deadline: There is no official deadline. Applications are accepted until program is full.
Requirements: Students must be covered by an international health care plan while studying and traveling in Ecuador and South America.
Students must register their international travel plans with Go Global. This service is free.
Students must attend monthly pre-departure orientation meetings in spring term.
