He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including Israel Philharmonic, Moscow State Orchestra, Orchestre Nationale de France, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony. Mr. Osorio’s concert tours have taken him to Europe, Asia, and North, Central and South America, where he has collaborated with such distinguished conductors as Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Klaus Tennstedt, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, James Conlon, Luis Herrera, Manfred Honeck, Eduardo Mata, Michel Plasson and Carlos Miguel Prieto, among many others.

In July 2011, Mr. Osorio performed all five Beethoven Concerti with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival in back-to-back concerts. Chicagoclassicalreview.com praised his performances as “revelatory on virtually every level.” Recent seasons have included concerts throughout Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Spain, and performances with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Puerto Rico, New Mexico, Louisiana, Memphis, Huntsville, Akron, Elgin and Florida (West Coast). Of Mr. Osorio’s 2007 New York Lincoln Center recital The New York Times proclaimed, “the sweep and freshness of his readings made his performance impossible to resist.”

A prolific recording artist, Mr. Osorio has recorded a wide variety of repertoire, including a Brahms solo CD that Gramophone hailed as “one of the most distinguished discs of Brahms’ piano music in recent years.” Other recordings by Mr. Osorio include Beethoven’s Five Piano Concerti and Choral Fantasy, Brahms Concerto No. 2, and concerti by Chávez, Mozart, Ponce, Rachmaninov, Rodrigo, Schumann and Tchaikovsky. Piano Español, a collection of works by Albéniz, Falla, Granados and Soler, received glowing reviews internationally and has marked Mr. Osorio as one of the great interpreters of Spanish piano music in the world.

Recipient of several international prizes and awards, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Gina Bachauer Award and the Rhode Island International Master Piano Competition, Mr. Osorio is passionately involved in the performance of chamber music. He is also a dedicated teacher and is on the faculty at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts. Mr. Osorio began his musical studies at the age of five with his mother, Luz María Puente, and later attended the conservatories of Mexico, Paris and Moscow, where he studied with Bernard Flavigny, Monique Haas and Jacob Milstein. Additionally, he worked with Nadia Reisenberg and Wilhelm Kempff.

This special event will include live Mariachi performances after the screening.

In rural Mexico, when a young boy’s parents are killed, he is raised by a farm worker and the town’s barman, who instills a desire of vengeance in him, and as an adult he romances a young woman who is going to marry a rich man to save her father from financial ruin. This 1941 Mexican film classic became an enormous hit and features Jorge Negrete as the first cinematic singing Mariachi. This performance made Negrete–”el charro cantor”–an international Latin film star and launched the appearance of singing mariachis in films.

As for the famous title song, Walt Disney borrowed the melody and added new English lyrics for his film The Three Caballeros (1944). The song has also been covered by Placido Domingo, Julio Iglesias and even Senator Ted Kennedy, who apparently serenaded Texan voters with it while campaigning for Barack Obama in 2008.

The fifth Mariachi Festival Canada is scheduled from May 15th to May 20th 2013 in various cities and locations in Canada, including a Mariachi Gala in Vancouver on Saturday May 18th 2013. The festival features mariachis, dancers and performers from Mexico, USA and Canada.

In Santiago de Chile…

What’s BC Mining Week?

The City of Vancouver plans to become the “greenest city in the world.” It is also home to the world’s largest conglomeration of mining companies. Beginning on April 29th 2013, Vancouver will host BC Mining Week. After an opening gala, where the “Mining Person of the Year Award 2012” will be granted, BC’s mining industry leaders will spend a week wining and dining at receptions, awards ceremonies and charitable events.

On their websites and in press releases, extractive corporations claim to bring economic and social ‘development’ to local and indigenous communities in BC and across the world. But the “greenwashing” can’t hide the increasing reports of conflict, environmental devastation, water toxicity and scarcity, human and indigenous rights violations, and violent repression–even murder–of residents who speak out in opposition to extractive projects.

Ever wondered why so many mining companies set up shop in Vancouver? The Canadian government actively assists extractive corporations with tax-breaks, subsidies, lax stock market regulations, diplomatic support, and immunity from prosecution for environmental destruction and human rights abuses overseas.

Koos, a little boy of almost eight, very much wants to look like his impressive, typically Dutch father, which is not an easy thing as Koos has been adopted from Peru and is rather small and of dark complexion. One day he sees a Peruvian boy playing a strange kind of music outside the supermarket and discovers that he, like the boy, is of Indian origin. Determined to embrace his roots, Koos goes on a journey of self-discovery to find out who he really is and where he comes from. This sensitive and insightful film looks at the fears and curiosities some adopted children experience.
